How to change your belts after they broke or perished. In this tutorial, we will show you how to change the drive-belts of your beloved Marantz CD-94. If you own a CD-94 for a longer time or plan to keep it forever, there will come a moment that you have to change the belts on the CDM1 loading-mechanism. I see people part from their CD-960 or CD-94 because one of the four drive-belts is broken or worn out. And changing these belts is a DIY job; you do not have to bring your CD-Player to an audio repair shop as well. All you need is some time and patience!
This tutorial is a somewhat universal instruction manual because you can use it for other CD-Players that used the CDM1 also.

If you do not want to change the drive-belts frequently, it is a good idea to use good drive-belts in the first place. You have lots of sellers of these belts on FleaBay, and most of them sell the cheap, common butyl ones. These drive-belts wear out faster, so you have to change them more regularly. That is why I am using these “blue belts” to replace the butyl ones on my players. Follow this link to get a set of drive-belts yourself!

So before we start, we need some tools and drive-belts. What tools do we need: A Philips screwdriver, needle nose pliers, a small slotted screwdriver, sintered bearing oil, and a spacer. The spacer can come in handy when you do not want to rewire the mechanism!

We took the Marantz CD94 as an example of course!

The printed circuit boards may differ depending on the model, but the loading mechanisms of the CDM1 were the same on all players that used it. Pull out the power plug first before you start working on your CD-Player. Only then remove the upper housing cover with the Philips screwdriver. Sort the four belts according to their intended position.

You can safely push the snap ring in the direction of a magnet so that it does not jump away and get lost. Otherwise, you should avoid bolting away by hand.

You can put the new drive-belt in place. Place the belt on the larger wheel by hand, then use the small slotted screwdriver to pull the belt onto the smaller wheel. 3. Place the larger belt around the smaller wheel. Then insert the loose drive wheel into the belt and push it onto the shaft, but do not push it down all the way immediately. 4. When you press the drive wheel into position again, the front steel axle must be lifted slightly so that the smaller pin on the back of the drive wheel fits in its raceway.

Without the player connected to mains power, actuate the power switch on the operating front. Then release the black extension from the power switch. Gently press it forward, pushing the green power-switch backward.

Separate the larger belt from the smaller wheel. Move the big belt aside first, and then replace the little belt first. 3. As we did on the opposite side, first place the little belt on the larger wheel by hand, then tension it on the smaller wheel with the slotted screwdriver.

Insert the spacer into the right front drive wheel, then arch the spacer and insert it into the rear drive wheel. Then loosen the snap ring on the rear-drive wheel with the slotted screwdriver. 3. The rear-drive wheel with wire can now be taken off the shaft, removing the old belt through the freshly created gap and insert the new one.

If necessary, the drive wheel can also be removed, without using the spacer. However, there is a greater risk that the wire rope will jump off, resulting in considerable additional work. Without the spacer, keep the wire rope under constant tension by hand when removing the drive wheel!

Finally; After the right drive wheel is in its initial position again, you can put back the tray with gentle pressure.

You can clean the guide-rails with isopropyl alcohol and a clean microfiber cloth. Apply a micro-drop of sintered bearing oil from our dosing needle bottle to each rail — since the sintered bearing oil has an enormous creeping capacity, do not apply more than a micro-drop. Do not use mineral oils or adhesive lubricants because they will immediately increase the sliding resistance.
